HOW TO CHOOSE MY TENNIS RACKET?
We all face this question, whether we are starting to play tennis or need to change our racket, either because it no longer suits us or because our tennis skills have significantly improved.
The first thing you need to analyze is how many times a week you play tennis and whether you are just starting or have been practicing for a while. This is vital because it allows us to segment the rackets and focus only on those suited to our purpose.
Depending on your personal characteristics—whether you are male or female, your height, body mass, and physical condition—you will need to select a heavier or lighter racket.
Rackets are segmented into beginner, intermediate, and intermediate/advanced levels. There is also a price range for each segment. Once we determine our level, we need to identify the recommended weight range, as it differs for beginners and experienced players.
Beginner Tennis Rackets
They usually weigh between 255 and 280 grams, primarily made of graphite and other types of fibers or aluminum. The purpose of these rackets is to allow the player to learn easily and enjoyably. They typically have head sizes between 100 inches (645 cm²) and 105 inches (660 cm²), providing a large sweet spot and forgiving mistakes. There are some exceptions weighing up to 300 grams, designed for players who are just starting but require more weight due to their strength. However, if this is your case, we recommend looking for a mid-range or even advanced racket on sale to start with.
Intermediate Player Rackets
These rackets are made of graphite. An intermediate player uses rackets weighing between 270 grams and 300 grams with a head size between 100 and 102 inches.
Advanced Player Rackets
The weight ranges from 280 grams to 315 grams. Rackets over 315 grams are typically used by professionals. Head sizes usually range from 100 to 97 inches. There are still some exceptions with 95-inch heads, but due to modern playing styles, brands are gradually discontinuing them.
JUNIOR TENNIS RACKETS
Junior rackets are divided by age and height, ensuring the racket length is appropriate for each case:
- -90 cm Children under 4 years old, size 17”.
- 90-100 cm Children 4 years old, size 19”
- 110-115 cm Children 4-6 years old, size 21”
- 115-125 cm Children 6-8 years old, size 23”
- 125-140 cm Children 8-9 years old, size 25”
- 140-150 cm Children 9-11 years old, size 26”
It is crucial for each child to use the appropriate length racket for optimal learning. Materials for junior rackets include: Sizes 19 to 24 - Aluminum. Sizes 25 and 26 may include “fusion” rackets made of graphite and aluminum or entirely graphite.
Junior Aluminum Rackets
These rackets are designed for the youngest players. Sizes 19 to 24 use aluminum due to its lightweight, making it easier to start learning. At these ages, children do not hit hard, so the racket can handle it without issues. These rackets typically have large heads and fewer strings to make learning easy and fun.
Junior Fusion Rackets
Fusion rackets are available in sizes 25 and 26 for juniors and in beginner adult rackets. In both cases, graphite is used in the racket's core for stability, while the head incorporates aluminum and carbon fibers for lightness. This design prevents excess weight in the head, facilitating movement.
Junior Graphite Rackets
Junior rackets made entirely of graphite are available in sizes 25 and 26. These models are recommended for players who have been playing and training for years. Their advanced skills require rackets that provide consistency and protect their joints due to the intensity of their game.
HOW TO CHOOSE GRIP SIZE?
Hand size is typically proportional to height. Common grip sizes for adults are L1, L2, L3, and L4. These references may help:
- L1 for heights between 145 cm and 165 cm
- L2 for heights between 165 cm and 180 cm
- L3 and L4 for heights between 180 cm and 200 cm or more
You can measure the ideal size by gripping the handle firmly. The index finger of the opposite hand should fit snugly between the fingertips and the base of the gripping hand. Remember, adding an overgrip increases handle thickness slightly.
Also, consider the string setup for your racket. String choice is as important as the racket itself for intermediate and advanced players.
If you need help, our team at Ipontennis is here to guide you in selecting the best strings for your racket and playing style.
